Panagiotis Papantoniou

Panagiotis Papantoniou is Assistant Professor at the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering of the University of West Attica. He is Civil Transportation Engineer (NTUA, 2008), he has a MSc (2009) and a PhD (2015) in the era of transportation planning and engineering. He has also carried out two Post doctoral researches in NTUA (2017) and TUM (2020) with respective individual fellowships.

He has extensive knowledge of the dynamics of transport, through his active participation for more than 12 years, as an engineer, researcher, transport consultant, representative of scientific organisations and advisor in all fields of transportation planning and infrastructure. His areas of expertise include road safety, road design, sustainable urban mobility and intelligent transportation systems.

As a freelancer – Transportation Engineer he has ten years of experiencein the implementation of studies focusing on traffic studies, road safety, parking and geometric design on behalf of public organizations and private bodies. At the same time, working in OSeven telematics company, he was responsible in the development of models for the evaluation of users’ driving behavior through an innovative rating system. He is now a co-founder of ScienTra – Science of Transport Company.

He has 12 years of experience as a researcher, has participated in 21 research projects carried out for the European Commission (8), other International Organizations (6) and Greek institutions (8). He has published 22 papers in scientific journals and 69 conference papers with full paper review.

As an academic, he is an assistant professor at the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering of the University of West Attica (2021) and he has 5 years of teaching experience having taught undergraduate courses at the University of West Attica, the University of Patras and the University of Thessaly.

Finally, Dr. Papantoniou is former President of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (2020-2024) member of scientific organizations and committees (12), reviewer of scientific journals and conferences (18) and member of the organizing committee of Greek and International conferences (8). He is honored with 14 scientific awards, including the Seal of Excellence, from the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program and the award “European Friedrich-List-Prize” as the best doctoral dissertation in transport in Europe for the year 2015 from European Platform of Transport Sciences.
